How to Sign a PDF Without Printing It
Print, sign, scan, email: there is a faster way. How to add a signature to a PDF on your computer or phone, and when that is legally enough.
· 5 min read
The classic routine still happens every day: print the PDF, sign it with a pen, scan it, email it back. It takes ten minutes and produces a crooked, grey copy. You can do the same thing in under a minute without paper.
Three ways to sign on screen
- Draw it: use your mouse, trackpad or finger on a phone. This looks the most like your real signature.
- Type it: type your name and pick a handwriting-style font. Quick, and fine for informal documents.
- Use an image: sign a white sheet once, photograph it and reuse the image.
Signing with our tool
Fill & Sign PDF lets you click anywhere on the page to type text (name, date, address), draw your signature and place it where it belongs. You can resize it and move it before saving. The result is written into the PDF permanently, so it looks the same in any viewer.
Because it runs in your browser, the contract you are signing is never uploaded to a third party, which is often the whole reason you are careful about it.
Is a drawn signature legally valid?
For most everyday documents, yes. In the US (ESIGN Act), the EU (eIDAS) and many other places, an electronic signature is generally accepted when both sides agree to sign electronically and the signature can be linked to the person. Rental applications, delivery forms, internal approvals and most freelance contracts fall into this category.
Some documents need more. Property deeds, certain financial and government forms, and anything that explicitly requires a "qualified" or "advanced" electronic signature need a certificate-based signature from an approved provider. A drawn signature is not that. If you are unsure, ask the party requesting the signature what they accept.
Tips for a clean result
- Sign larger, then shrink it. Drawing small with a mouse looks shaky; scale it down afterwards.
- Fill in the date next to it. Many forms are rejected for a missing date, not a missing signature.
- Flatten before sending. Saving writes the signature into the page so it cannot be moved by the next person.
- Keep the original. Save the signed copy under a new name.
