Fill a Scanned PDF Form Without Printing: Text, Dates and Drawn Signatures
Place text on a flat scanned form, distinguish filling from OCR, and check signatures and saved output before returning the file.

A scanned form is often just a photograph of paper inside a PDF. Clicking a printed line will not create an editable field, and typing in an ordinary viewer may do nothing. That does not mean you must print it.
You can place new text on top of the page. This is a different task from recognizing the old text or reconstructing the original form fields. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing a tool.
Fill the page, not its printed text
Open Fill & Sign PDF and select the scanned document. The tool displays the page and lets you place text at a chosen location, regardless of whether the source contains interactive form fields.
Use text mode for names, dates and addresses. Adjust the font size and color so entries fit the printed boxes. Leave enough room for letters that extend above or below the main line. Long entries may need a smaller size or an agreed abbreviation; the tool does not redesign the form.
Add a signature only if it is accepted
Switch to signature mode, draw with a mouse or finger, and place the drawing where required. A slightly larger initial drawing is often easier to control before reducing its displayed size.
This produces a visible signature image. It does not verify identity, issue a certificate or provide certificate-based tamper detection. Ask the recipient what signing method they accept. If the process requires a particular electronic signature service, a drawn image is not a substitute for that requirement.
Check each entry before saving
- Confirm the spelling of names and identifiers.
- Check the date format requested by the form.
- Move any entry that overlaps a line or checkbox.
- Inspect every page for missed required fields.
- Save a separate completed copy.
Text and the signature drawing are embedded into the page content when saved. They are not merely a temporary viewer overlay. However, embedding an image does not make the PDF impossible for another editor to modify.
Open the downloaded result in another viewer to check positioning, character rendering and page count. The saved copy, rather than the editing preview, is what the recipient will see.
When OCR helps
If you need to search or copy the original printed instructions, use OCR PDF with a supported language. OCR is not necessary just to write on a scanned form, and it does not automatically identify every box as an interactive field.
Avoid sending sensitive originals with a support request. A synthetic sample with the same page size and empty boxes is usually enough to explain a placement problem. Downloaded completed forms remain on your device until you delete them.
The pdf-lib page API describes drawing text and images on PDF pages. That is the relevant technical distinction between adding visible entries and performing a certified signing process.
