How to Convert Word to PDF Without Microsoft Word

No Office licence on this computer? You can still turn a .docx into a clean PDF. What carries over, what does not, and how to check.

Someone sends you a .docx and asks for it back as a PDF, but the computer in front of you has no Microsoft Office. You do not need to install anything.

The quick way

Open Word to PDF, drop the .docx file, check the preview and download. The document is read and converted in your browser, so it is never uploaded, which matters when the file is a CV, a contract or a letter with personal details.

What carries over well

  • Headings and their hierarchy
  • Paragraphs, bold, italics and underlines
  • Bulleted and numbered lists
  • Tables with simple structure
  • Images placed in the text

What gets simplified

Word documents can contain layout features that only Word itself renders exactly. These are simplified in any converter that is not Word:

  • Text boxes and shapes that float over the page
  • Page headers and footers
  • Exact page breaks and section layouts
  • Unusual fonts that are not installed on your device

For a CV, a report or a letter, the result is usually clean. For a heavily designed brochure, export it from the program it was designed in.

Other options

  • Google Docs: upload the file, then File, Download, PDF. Works well, but the file goes to your Google account.
  • LibreOffice: free desktop suite with very good .docx support. Worth installing if you convert often.
  • Word on the web: needs a Microsoft account and uploads the file to OneDrive.

Check before you send

  1. Scroll through the preview and compare page count with the original.
  2. Look closely at tables and lists, the most fragile parts.
  3. If the PDF is large because of photos, run it through Compress PDF.

Open: Word → PDF, free, and your file never leaves your device.
