Compare Two PDF Versions Before Sending: Find Text Changes and Check What Is Missing
Use a text comparison report for revisions, account for moved sections and OCR errors, and review visual changes separately.

Two PDFs named final.pdf and final-new.pdf are not enough to establish what changed. A price, deadline or clause can differ in the middle of a long document while the first page looks identical.
A text comparison helps locate those changes. It is one part of review, not a complete proof that two files are equivalent. Images, typography, page placement and signatures require separate inspection.
Choose the comparison pair carefully
Open Compare PDF and assign the earlier document to A and the proposed revision to B. Clear filenames help you avoid comparing two copies of the same file or reversing the direction of additions and deletions.
The tool extracts text, aligns it and shows added lines in green and removed lines in red. A similarity percentage summarizes the text comparison, but a high score does not mean a change is unimportant. One altered digit can matter more than several unchanged pages.
Use the options deliberately
Start with the default comparison. If changes are dominated by spacing, enable the option to ignore whitespace and run it again. Ignoring letter case can help with stylistic changes, but it can also conceal distinctions you wanted to inspect.
Unchanged sections can be collapsed to make the differences easier to scan. Expand the surrounding context whenever a short changed line is ambiguous. Always interpret the highlighted text within the document rather than judging color blocks alone.
For very large inputs, the algorithm may use a faster approximate alignment and show a warning. A rough alignment is useful for finding candidate differences, but it needs a closer manual review.
Investigate moved sections and scanned pages
A paragraph moved from one place to another may appear as a deletion followed by an addition. Check both locations before assuming its wording changed. Reordered pages can produce many such differences.
A scanned PDF without text cannot be compared by this text tool. Use OCR PDF with a supported language first. Recognition errors can then appear as differences even when the printed source is unchanged, so compare suspicious results against the page images.
The same caution applies to PDFs with broken font encodings or unusual reading order. Extraction quality sets the ceiling for the comparison quality.
Finish with a reviewable record
- Check prices, dates, names and obligations in their original page context.
- Review visual changes separately in both PDFs.
- Download the text report if you need a record.
- Keep the two input files with that report.
- Confirm the exact approved filename before sending.
A comparison report does not verify a digital signature or certify that a contract is acceptable. It helps you find textual revisions for a person to assess.
For background on extracting page text, PDF.js provides the underlying document and page model. The practical limit remains important: comparing extracted text cannot report a changed diagram that contains no text.
