Add Page Numbers After Merging PDFs: Covers, Starting Numbers and Final Checks
Number a combined report without confusing physical page order with printed numbering, and check covers, existing numbers and margins.

A report assembled from several PDFs often has three different numbering systems: the viewer's page counter, numbers already printed in the source pages, and the new sequence you want to add. These are not automatically synchronized.
Before numbering, finish the page order and decide what the recipient expects. Does the cover count? Should every page carry a number? Must the first chapter display one? A short numbering plan prevents a polished but confusing final document.
Merge and organize first
Combine files with Merge PDF, then fix the sequence in Page Organizer. Remove unwanted blank backs before adding numbers. If you move pages afterwards, the numbers already drawn on them move with those pages.
Open the final sequence in Add Page Numbers. The tool can place numbers at the top or bottom, align them left, center or right, and add fixed header or footer text.
Understand the starting number
The tool offers a starting number, but it is an offset from the PDF's physical page order. Leaving a cover unnumbered by selecting pages 2 onward does not make the next page automatically become one.
For example, with starting number one and a range of 2-, the physical second page displays two. If you need the body to start at one after a separate cover, split out the body, number that part, then merge the cover back. Check the result rather than assuming the range restarts the counter.
The total placeholder represents the document's total page count. Decide whether that total should include the cover before choosing a format such as Page n of total.
Place the numbers without covering content
- Choose the format and the target page range.
- Set the starting number, position and alignment.
- Adjust font size, color and margin.
- Add fixed header or footer text only if needed.
- Inspect pages with the least free space before downloading.
The available font size is 6–24 points and the margin control is 8–80 points. Those are controls, not recommendations to use tiny text. A readable number in a clear margin is more useful than one that overlaps a footnote.
Verify the saved copy
Existing printed numbers are not removed. If the source already says page one, adding another number in the same corner can make both unreadable. Choose another position or return to the original authoring file for a cleaner correction.
Open the result and inspect the cover, the first numbered page, section boundaries and the last page. Check that the number format and total match your plan. Recheck print preview if the report will be printed.
The pdf-lib page API documents drawing text on an existing page. Numbering adds page content; it does not rewrite every pre-existing reference or table of contents for you.
